WRL-introduction, mission statement and organisation aims

Work placement- Chesterfield College football academies
                          Mission statement and organisational goals
Since I was young I have had a passion for sport so my career aim is to do something within sports (teaching, coaching or sports management). My work placement is at Chesterfield college and I help out with the football academies.

My work placement is based mainly at Clowne college, which is a small village just off Balbourough. Chesterfield college was started in 1841but was known as the Chesterfield and Brampton mechanics institute and in 1884 became an arts college before being named chesterfield college. It is based on three sites the main site is on infirmary road in chesterfield, the next Tapton house that is a mile down road from infirmary road and the last one being Clowne college. All three sites offer different classes to people and have disability access.

"Every Organisation needs a mission statement and goals to achieve the purpose of that business, if not the business would have no motivation or guidelines and will fail".
                                                                                   (Radtke, J 1998).

The main vision is by 2015 they will become recognised nationally as an outstanding college by learners, employers, partners, regulators and the people who work for you, . To achieve this they have a mission in equipping you with the skills and knowledge for progression and employment: this is how they aim to accomplish this-

1. Putting the learner at the centre of our activities by meeting their needs and developing their potential
2. Providing a supportive, inclusive and welcoming environment
3. Acting as a catalyst for economic development by working with employers, stakeholders and local communities
4. Engaging, valuing and developing our colleagues
5. Ensuring efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability
6. Enhancing the College’s profile and reputation locally, regionally and nationally
The mission statement helps show people how they aim to achieve their vision and sets a guideline for the future.
Looking above at the mission statement it says enhancing the college's profile and reputation locally, regionally and nationally this sounds good on paper but the college itself and the people in charge will need to make significant improvements if this is to be achieved. According to Hipp (2007) mission statements don't work and are so common in places that nobody listens to them. Is there any evidence to suggest that mission statements don't work?. looking at the two references there seems to be contrasting views on the subject has anyone else got any views??.
